Artist Reception: David Whittick

“After spending 30 years as an engineer immersed in "left-brain" thinking, I decided it was time to exercise my "right brain" by taking up watercolor painting.
I was drawn to watercolor because it requires so little to get started—just water, paint, paper, and brushes. I bought a small travel watercolor kit, a few brushes, some postcard-sized paper, and began taking classes from local Carmel artists.
For the past 30 years, I've used watercolor painting to capture the memories my wife and I have made while traveling together. This year's exhibit features paintings inspired by four recent trips:
Late Summer 2025: Canada, Iceland & Greenland Cruise
December 2025: Nuevo Nayarit, Mexico
January 2026: Chile, Antarctica, Paraguay & Argentina Cruise
June 2026: Turkey, including Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the Turquoise Coast
The paintings are grouped by destination, with maps showing our travel routes for those interested in following the journey.
Last year, someone mentioned that I hadn't painted any scenes from Monterey or Carmel. Inspired by that suggestion, I've included several local landscapes from recent hikes, along with a few paintings influenced by Monterey artists. One wall also features matted paintings from last year's exhibit.
Most of the paintings are available in exchange for a donation to The Carmel Foundation, with the exception of those marked with a red "Not for Sale" dot. Information on how to acquire a painting is posted on the display wall, or you may ask Laura at the Front Desk for assistance.
As an added incentive, I will personally match the total amount donated through the sale of my paintings.”
